How to choose the right rug size

A rug that is too small is the most common room-planning mistake.

Living room

Choose a rug large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it. Common sizes are 5x8 and 8x10 feet.

Bedroom

Under a queen bed, an 8x10 rug lets it extend past both sides. Leave space to step onto it from the bed.

Dining room

Add about 24 inches on each side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Tip

Mark the outline with painter's tape before you buy.
